VW Sharan ADY engine, 1996, 2 litre petrol start the car, hesitation and stumbling whilst driving and rev limiter cuts in at 4500rpm(i think its in limp/safe mode), leave engine running and clear fault code 0203 (hall effect sensor out of range) without turning engine off and when you drive it after it drives perfectly, pull over, switch engine off, restart engine and fault code reappears and its back in llimp/safe mode again. Ecu tested by reputable company who said it was ok, hall sensor replaced, crank sensor replace, coil replaced, Air mass meter replaced, all wiring between ecu pins and relevant sensor/components for continuity etc, all appear ok, voltage checked at sensors all appear within spec, does anyone have any ideas other than a gallon of fuel and a lighter!!!!

    Hi,

Yeap, as suspected, I installed my old distributor and all is OK noe, no fault codes anymore.

How are you getting on with your car issues?
    Cheers

I seem to have the same problem with my VW Golf 1998, 2Litre petrol. It has abit of hesitation and when I took it for diagnosis, it returned 0203 Hall Sensor. I'm wondering how to sort it out, do I need a new Distributor?

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay in my response but was out of town past few days.

Are you still having the problem?
    Cheers

I'm getting this problem too - exactly the same as Cawte12345 - fault happens when car is started - OK if codes are cleared when engine is running.

I have put in another distributor (2nd hand) and there has been no change.

I get 11v between pins 1 & 3 on the hall sensor connector.

Can someone let me know what they did to fix this?

    Regards

    Keith

Gosh, that was a long time ago.

If I remember correctly Keith, I sorted mine out by replacing the Coil pack located on teh bulk head within the engine compartment, it was pushing out a spark but not strong enough.

Picked one out of a Golf at the Scrapi for a fiver.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

How did you figure that one out?
Going from a reported Hall sensor fault to replacing the coil?

I've had a price of £16 for a coil from the local VW breakers, so I might pop down and get it - not too much to pay even if it doesn't work!

Would be good to know if you had any other indications that the coil was at fault so I could rule it in or out without having to go and get one, especially after fitting a distributor for apparently no reason!

    Regards

    Keith

Well I ignored the error code and took the old fasion route, not starting every now and then for no reason.

I had already done the spark plugs/dist cap, rotor arm and plug leads, I used a timing strobe gun to check each lead for spark and they were all hit or miss so I figured the common lead was the one from the coil, as i had already replaced the coil lead, the coil was next in the equation.

Took me all bloddy day tho with lots of naughty words.

    Good luck

I don't have problems with missing (except at 4500 rpm) but I decided to change the coil - also regapped the plugs

    No Change!!

The only thing I can think of is that the Dissi from the scrap yard must have a faulty hall sensor too!

Think the next stage is either to get a recon dissi or find a hall sensor.

Does anyone know how to test a hall sensor?

    Regards

    Keith
