Gear shifter rivet failure, box out and strip down.

That is up to you, box apart on the bench- I would rebuild.

when the rivet breaks does the selector fork just come off or does anything else like gears get damaged too? ive heard some were you can jus use a stronger nut and bolt instead after drilling rivet out, is there another rivet on the diff? thanks

The diff is riveted but nothing to do with the problem. Yes you can bolt the selector lever on. Nothing gets around the fact that the box has to come out and be pulled apart on the bench before deciding on anything. Otherwise it is like baking a cake before buying or even deciding on the ingredients.

ok thanks, i will have the gearbox out tmr and inspect the damage, what i was asking was, the selector rivet breaking would that cause any other damage to gearbox? dont want the garbox rebuilt unless i take it to a vw specialist which will cost more ££s, just had flywheel and clutch done also injector loom now this issue,

As the rivet falling out stops selection and therfore driving I have not seen it cuase any further damage-yet.
