dont know if anyone can help ,but bought my audi A4 avant 2004 83000 miles full service history private ,and the PRNDS light flashes on the dash ,it was also making a loud noise ,took to audi dealer as though it was ECU ,they said it needed new ECU £1168.00 and said the noice was wheel bearing ,£220 ,since then we ordered the ECU and had the wheel bearing sprted ,now there is no noise and the car is running fine ,gears changing as they should ,very quiet ,lovely ride ,just the flashing PRNDS light ,could audi be wrong ,the man wh did the wheel bearing said there was loads of play in they wheel bearing so the sensor could be giving a false reading ,dont want to spend £1168 if i dont have to ,would be grateful for any help.

PRNDS - stands for Park, Reverse,Netural, Drive & sport.

Only one should be lit at any time dependant on what you have selected.

Gearbox ECU sounds like it has a fault locked in, so is in safe mode hence why the warning is flashing.

Get the fault codes read either by dealer or with a copy of VAG-COM.
Get them to clear faults at same time.

It may be an old fault registered caused by a power glitch, which can be reset and will not return, or it could be something wrong with a gearbox sensor.

As I said, you need to get the vehicle plugged into a computer.
There are two routes for this, dealer / audi specialist independant.
Somebody with VAG-COM on a PC and the right lead.

Subject to the faults found this will advise what needs to be done.

I have know this fault because the ECU lost power when a fuse was checked, a simple reset was all that was needed.
However if it will not clear, or comes straight back than you have a faulty sensor or ECU.

It may be the dealer has already checked by plugging the vehicle into his diagnostics system.

The box at present must be running in limp mode. This is for getting to destination rather than normal use. Only basic functions of gearbox are used.

I would not recommend runnning it in this mode for longer than possible, as modern Auto boxes can be fragile compared to the old manual ones and cost a packet to change.

    Hello,

This was something that happened a short time after purchasing my car - it happened twice and I thought it was just "one of those things" (new to Audi and auto). There were other problems with the car (gearbox - inc. 7-plate clutch and valve body - now fitted) and I didn't link the two together.

When I did mention it to the Audi dealer he said that if the PRNDS light up all together that there is a problem - a bit like a warning light.

I don't like paying money out but if it needs doing....
