    hi all,

my good lady has an audi a4 avant 1996(n reg) tdi. i have changed the radio/cass for a cd player , but the airbag light has been on since. quite common iv'e heard. my question is is there a hand held obd scanner or obd cable/software that will reset the airbag light and the insp light for this car please. i have tryed reading other posts to understand the differance between the leads and the software and the obd scanner but i can't make up my mide what will do which. some will do the airbag and not the service light and some the service light but not the air bag.

    regards

get vag com, the shareware version will reset the air bag light, and you will also be able to read any fault codes in the ecu so you will know which airbag is causing the trouble, probably a connection under one of the seats. i think you can reset the service lights with the two buttons on the instrument panel.

just get a cheapo hex can usb one off ebay (about £15), it will fit that car. the service should work on that car as it does on my '98 a4. hold the right button down, turn ignition on while still holding it, should say something like INSP ---, then let go of right button and press the left button to reset the insp, then turn left button to right until it says oil then press left button again to reset oil.

you need vagcom to do the insp. warning on early a4s, the cheap cables and shareware will reset airbag light if its not a serious fault, and let you set your own insp. intervals
but id get some advice before getting a cable, i had one from ebay that wouldnt communicate with a lot of the controllers it should of, so ended up buying a used genuine cable
where are you someone on here may be able to help, im in stoke if thats any use
