    The Haynes manaul says that you have to slacken the handbrake cable before changing the rear pads. is that really neccessary?

    not if it has not been adjusted in any time just replace pads
    no matter how you try you always come back to what you first started

    Thanks, slackening the handbrake apears to be more of a pain than changing the pads!

    there is a thread on how to change rear pads by my self just a few lines down hope this helps rich...

    no matter how you try you always come back to what you first started

    Thanks for the link. I have ESP and understand that you need VAG-COM (which I have but don't know how to use for brake bleeding) when bleeding the brakes. I should be able to get away without bleeding if I am careful, shouldn't I?

    I never bleed mine changing all the pads and discs.

    Just watch the resevior doesnt overflow. Taking out the excess.

    OK, been changing pads for years, hower the Haynes makes it sound more difficult than it actually is!
