Based on what you describe the firs things I'd be looking at are the anti-roll drop links and the anti-roll mounting bushes. I would have thought they'd get the biggest battering and would show up with a rattle on uneven roads. the good news is that they are straightforward to inspect and replace.

    hi humphry
yes that sounds good i am very capable of these antiroll bushes and antiroll links i seem to have to do these all the time on my other cars and van for mot's !! i have just changed the anti roll links on the front of this allroad for mot advisory i thought that was the issue but then realized it was coming from the back .surprised it was not picked up on the mot ?? .

Audi A6: Audi Dynamic Suspension for some more info on the tech side of the rear suspension. Lots of bushes presumably because it's self-tracking... I had to replace the collar bushes themselves on the front too where the bar is mounted to the body, not just the droplinks.

For me the odd thing is that I only get it in the higher settings - Allroad and Lift.
    Auto and Dynamic are fine.

The track I go up is very rough - there is no issue on the main road that I have noticed.

I had a good look about underneath and saw nothing!

The problem with bushes is that you may not see anything. You may need to get a lever in there to see excessive movement and it's easiest when the car is on a lift. I go on age, mileage and suspicion and if I don't get it right first time, it's a process of elimination!! My wife's car is a Disco 3 which goes through bushes like I go through wine gums so I got a fast track course in diagnosing suspension noises...
