I've just done my first brim to brim fuel up on my 2.0 TDI and only managed to get 33.2 UK mpg. I suppose I've been a little heavy with the right foot at times but not excessively. I do a fair amount of motorway miles (around 70%) so was quite concerned to see such a low mpg. My old 2008 BMW 520d would usually average around 38 mpg without taking it too easy. I was expecting to see at least low 40s from the A6.

I have noticed the gearing is quite different on the A6, it's usually indicates it want's to be in top gear by around 46-50 mph whereas the BMW would not need changing up into 6th until around 60 mph. Maybe I just haven't got used the new gearing yet and need to change up earlier.

    Any thoughts?

    Hi
I'm new on here and just browsing. Some incredibly useful threads.

Ive got a 2013 model 2.0 TDI 177 Avant Manual. I've had it 18 months and done 21k miles. In that time I've averaged a little over 47mpg. I drive to the speed limits and the 21k average speed is 38 mph. Over the first 10k it slowly improved from low-mid 40's to where it is now. It does use quite a lot more when the temperature drops below about 8-9 degrees.

I've checked the DIS using brim to brim and it UNDER reads by about 1%. That's a first for me.
My last tank was 51.3 mpg on a 430 mile journey from Luton to Yorkshire and down to Sussex, including rush hour M1 last Thursday (topped up yesterday with 38.1 litres). The M1's 50 mph av spd cameras may have helped I suppose!

My commute is 30 miles about 60/40 motorway/country lane and I get 44 on that in the winter, about 50 in the summer.

I'd say 33.2 mpg with 70% motorway use is a little concerning. From your post I assume it's a manual, which model year? I can happily dawdle in 6th at anything over 40 mph without it labouring. I drove a brand new A3 2.0 TDI manual recently that struggled to hold anything below 50 mph in 6th without vocal protests.

Yes it is a manual and the car was registered in Jan 2012.

On a single commute to work, which is my main journey I've managed 40 mpg according to the dis.

I'm going to try changing up earlier and be a little more gentle with the throttle and see what improvement I can make.

These sot of comments sadly reflect what a poorly supported forum this is. No wonder people post something and then you don't hear another thing from them, when you get a sarcastic coment like this.

Fortunately I'm long past worrying about about things like that

I know what you mean, but sadly I feel it puts so many people of. There seems to be an 'in crowd' and then everybody else. Not a patch on other forums.

Not completely true eh? If the search function was used then every conceivable question on MPG has been asked and the answers can be found.

If it's not a patch on other forums then off is the direction you can ****!

A controversial post and suddenly everybody wakes up and gets posting. It is a shame that somebody didn't redirect mr outs to this, rather than the sarcastic comment.
