Thinking on it, changing the car is a bit of a false economy either way. With just a 4mile drive, even a petrol car won't reach operating temperature in that time which means it will be running cold (and inefficient). I'm in the same boat in a way - used to drive my 3.0TDi 24 miles a day to work. I then moved house...4 days a week its only driving 4 miles each way! However, I do a 104 mile round trip every monday..and often visit my parents who now live a 110 mile round trip away....

I'm not sure about that. Say you weigh 80kg - that equals about 880 newtons. The crank arms on a bike are about 175mm or 0.175m therefore, assuming you put all your weight on one pedal, 880 x 0.175 = 175 newton metres or about 130 ft lbs at the cranks. Not bad actually.

Our second car is a 1.0 petrol Fiesta with 3 cylinder engine. The trick is the turbo which gives it 99bhp with decent torque. OK - nothing like a 3.0 TDi but I did see that Audi I think are introducing their own equivalent engine in the A1. For something around town that may be an option in the longer term.

Well I took the plunge and traded in the A4 for an A1.
I got the 1.4 Tfsi 185 S-Tronic model and love it. My wife has had one for almost 2 years now and it is a great car.
It also brings a smile to my face when i drive it.
I am sad to see the big A4 Avant go but the time was right to change and i got a cracking deal.
