Diesel? If so you've interrupted a DPF regen. Totally normal.

Not sure how i would knowingly interupt a regen, car has been at VW all day apparently its been plugged into computer and heated up to 650 degrees to burn all coke off they saying that it could be short running from factory and on and off boat and transporters etc i find that very hard to believe it only had 8 miles on when i fetched it

In the early days of my 2.0 tdi the regen seemed to be running far too frequently. I took it to the garage, who put it on their machine and said there was nothing wrong. (How come machines do all the diagnosis now? What happened to intelligent mechanics who know the brand and its engines?).
Anyway, over time that frequency did appear to reduce. Now it is over 20,000 miles I seldom have the stationary, engine off fan.

It may have only had 8 miles on the clock but the engine may have been idling for a massively long time when it's been manoveured... It's winter now and the guys moving them don't like to freeze, so if they need to move 100 cars.... start engine on all of them and put the heater on, brings a fair amount of soot into dpf

I wouldn't worry. Mines did exactly the same as yours when I picked it up, quickly settled down. Hardly ever notice the fan now, 20,000 miles on
