2008 S Model - Speaker Problem

Got a 2008 S spec Golf, that only has front speakers, however only the tweeters are operational.

Do the have crossovers for other speakers that could've failed, or more simply disconnected for some bizarre reason?

Yes, some do have crossovers mounted inside the doors, but if yours only has front speakers it wont have them.
The ones that don't have cross overs have the speaker wires from the radio connected to the main bass speaker. There is a link within the base speaker that sends audio to the tweeters, so if the tweeters are working it looks like the base speaker itself is faulty.

Strange that they would go in both doors though?

got someone with Vagcom taking a look tomorrow to see if there's anything showing up on that.

Your right, that does sound like an unlikely coincidence. Did they both fail at the same time?

Just bought it so don't know.

im wondering if they've not been activated in VAGCOM or something as they tend not to just stop operating.

Don't think it'll need activated. The audio must be going down the wires or the tweeters wouldn't work.
Maybe the previous owner "really" liked his tunes.

Will see tomorrow, but I just can't see 2 speakers going...it's got to be something simple(ish).

There is one possible scenario in that somehow the unit has been programmed for output to an audio amplifier and therefor the signal level is very low.Answer if this is the case is to check and reset with VCDS although some Head Units could be re-programed for this by certain similtanious button pushes. (MFD 1 for instance)
