Good evening to all forum members, I need some help please.

I have a 2006 2.0TFSI which intermittently loses its ability to accelerate. I rarely see a motorway living on an island, but on my last couple of trips away I have experienced a one-off complete lack of acceleration when pulling onto a motorway and trying to gain speed. This has only happened once on both trips and on each occasion after a few seconds the fault has gone and normal performance is resumed for the remainder of my holiday. It felt very much like the turbo wasn't kicking in.

More recently this has happened on local driving (speed limit 40mph) when I have put my foot down for a bit of fun. The last two times I have noticed the revs will climb to somewhere just under 4,000 and then hang there. I find if I drop off the accelerator and then try again it will be back to normal. VCDS has shown a fault code 000136 - Fuel Rail/System pressure too low p0087. I've read what I can on this but the classic problem of worn cam lobes for the HPFP wouldn't give such an intermittent fault.

Are there any thoughts? Is there anything I can test or check?

I'd probably look into fuel starvation problems before looking at the pump - filter, sender unit, etc. Could also be a defective pressure sensor, if you have the capability to check, you could compare idle pressure to expected values..

I possibly have sorted it, but not entirely. I logged fuel pressures, both actual and requested with VCDS and found that once the engine demand increased the fuel pressure wasn't keeping up which was a fairly clear indication the fuel pump couldn't keep up with demand. I ended up removing the fuel pump and found the cam follower worn right through and the end of the fuel pump plunger quite badly worn. I replaced both and fuel pressures have improved though not entirely back to normal. I suspect my cam shaft lobe is worn but I'm not going to replace that as the cost is too high for me.
