I've a 2008 2.7 tdi which is great and i've loved driving her every day for the last 3yrs but i'm at the point that i'm thinking of changing her.
I'm between the 2.0 tfsi and 3.0 tdi engine in the A4 or the 2.0 or 3.0 tdi in the new facelifted version of the A6.

Does anyone have any real world figures on what these engines should do?
I commute 14 miles each way, mostly good country roads where i'm doing 60mph and the last 4 in Belfast traffic.
    Home via the motorway.

Anyone know if there are known problems with either engine? I've seen a couple of posts about the tfsi engine burning a lot of oil. Is this common?

    Thanks

I have a new 2.0TFSI (Quattro S-Tronic) A4 Avant, done 1500 miles. I'd estimate (as it's from the DIS not measured yet) that I'm getting around 28mpg on a very similar journey. Mines 17 miles each way, 13 on dual carriageway and 4 miles lanes/town driving, a bit each end. I tend to do 60mph on the way in, and 70-85 on the way home! No oil problem - now at 8/10ths on "gauge" so probably around 10,000 miles/litre.

Hi, For what its worth, I've got the 3.0TDi (240bhp) in the A4. Best I can get is probably around 40ish MPG and thats on a long motorway run of 50 miles with little stop-starting. I think there a number of configurations now with the 3.0TDi, so I'd expect the economy to vary a bit depending on the version you pick. Being a rather big car I wouldn't expect the A6 to get much better than what I get (if at all). 14 miles isn't a huge commute, you will probably spend the first 5-8 miles of that just warming the 3.0TDi engine up as it is a big beast (during which time you won't get best fuel economy). Simply put I'd say the figures are comparable. If the A6 is going to add the extra cost of Ad-blue in addition to the higher cost of diesel fuel, I'd probably lean closer towards the petrol with your mileage. Test drive both though!

Update: Argh..sorry my coffee hadn't gone down yet. I failed to notice you mentioned the 2.0TDi in there too. I'd seriously look at that - it will give you the best balance of power and economy. Plenty of power/torque and easily give you the best MPG when compared to the 3.0TDi and 2.0TFSI.

I had a 3.0l Tdi A6 Quattro Tiptronic Le Mans Avant before, and averaged 33mpg, and maxed around 40 on a run to Devon on cruise. It does take an age to warm up, the 2.0TFSI takes < 5 mins. I chose a petrol replacement due to the complexities of the Euro5 Cat / AdBlue system and initial costs for what I wanted. A4 because I wanted new not used.

Ive found Quattro uses a hell of a lot more juice than a standard 2 wheel drive.

Yep, quite a bit. But it was a 4WD I bought it for.

What sort of mpg are you getting on the TFSI? I'm getting 32.8 from what I've got and wouldn't want to be getting much less that that.

Think my problem is that I've been spoilt by my 2.7 tdi. It has a lot of grunt and so to drop to a 2.0tdi just won't be the same as a v6.

With regards to the V6 comment...depends on the car you get. If I remember correctly, isn't the 2.7TDi 190bhp? The next gen 2.0TDi is meant to be ~195bhp....and they are shedding a lot of weight from the vehicle hull. This means you'll get better power delivery, economy and a better power:weight ratio. Win all around....

The 2.0TDI (177) with the quattro S-tronic is a good compromise and works well but I still preferred the smoothness (and effortless power) of the 3.0 TDI. I get 40 on my motorway commute and I'd guess you'd get low 30s on your journey. Friend has a facelifted A4 2.0TQ and likes it.

I think on such a small commute forget the economy and go with what you like driving (even an S4?!)
