My car occasionally exhibits a judder in 1st / 2nd gear, almost like it lurches forward very slightly. Is this normal behaviour or maybe the sign of an upcoming issue?

It is out of warranty but I had been considering getting an after market one to cover such big items.

First off, I take it you didn't go ahead and tune this?? No this aint normal, it sounds possibly like the box is at fault. If it had been a 2.0lt I would have suspected a DMF problem but I'm pretty sure that's ruled out. Try a pm to gupsterg, what he don't know probably aint worth knowing.

But do beware the doom mongers of the Internet! - Have you thought of consulting someone who may actually know something about it?

Yes absolutely but I would prefer to have the opportunity to put a warranty in place maybe before I get it checked at Audi. When I bought the car they checked it over for me and couldn't find anything except it needing tyres which are now sorted...

    ^^What he said

A assuming the S-tronic requires a fluid/filter change at 40k miles like the multitronic?

If so it doesn't seem too expensive:

2 Litres and under < Fixed price services < Servicing and MOT < Owners Area < Audi
    XK8 96 Dyno'd at 305 and LPG converted, a mere 65ppl
    A6 07 3.0 quattro tip SE Limo, black,black leather/tints /black alloys/towbar/Alientech Eco Remap/quads/Rear DVD screens/Pogo Alert+

My C7 A6 has the DL501 S-Tronic. That's the seven-speed one for longitudinal Quattro cars with upto 600Nm torque output (wet clutches with larger plates than previous and uses two separate oil circuits).

It had a slight issues with shifts of 1st and 2nd. Mainly the downshifts. It was perfectly driveable, but not quite smooth as it should be. Took it to the dealer for them to look at it and Audi replaced the mechatronic unit under warranty.
