Hi, in April I purchased a 51 reg golf mk4 1.6 petrol. I noticed it had a wet footwell on the rear passenger side, sent it back to the garage and they said it was a problem with the water hose to the back windscreen, which they fixed. Since then its pretty much not rained and I figured it was fixed. Now the weather has turned again its sodden. AGAIN. So clearly that wasn't the fault.

When it rains the rear footwell on the passenger side ends up soaked, like squelching soaked. Ive put stuff down over it and the water isn't coming from above. I've looked all round the door seals and they seem to be fine. Now this week its rained more the front passenger footwell is now also soaked. When the water is there a while I seem to get a lot of electrical faults. Back in april my central locking went as did the electric windows. Once it dried out it all worked fine again. This time similar is happening, when I unlocked the car yesterday al the windows opened themselves.

Today, the air vents are behaving strangely. When the vents are on recirculate they work fine, but when I switch it to fresh air there is nothing coming out the vents. You can hear it running but its like they are closed when they're not.

Theres not obvious water ingress anywhere from what I can see. It had a good service in may and had a new pollen filter and all the drain things cleared.

Mechanic is having it next week to investigate and was hoping I could give him some ideas as to what to try as he is a bit clueless at the moment too.

Oh and another issue is when I have the air vents on (this is ongoing since I had it) i get the smell of fumes in the car. Mechanic has had a look and theres no fuel leak nor oil leak. Could this be linked?

    Thanks

    Cara

The first thing I'd check is that the window regulator seals haven't perished. It's a very common cause of water ingress on VWs.
If you're looking for pointers for your mechanic, just search the forum. I'm sure you'll find plenty of posts on the subject of water ingress.

    Jim.

Hey I have discovered the same problem this evening. I can't find the origin of it. Any guidance would be fabulous as would love to sort it myself.

Check if the panel/cabin filter is wet, sometimes the seals perish and let water into the car.

    Hi folks.

We have discovered that the pipe for the rear windscreen had come loose so I'm hoping that the water was from that and from the continual attempts to see if it worked.

Really easy to identify by pulling up carpet in the boot.

Will see how much it dries out over the next couple of days.

    Will keep you posted.
