i have been back to the dealer in Milton Keynes, after an hour of investigation they have now told me that the upload / update they carried out last week is on the hard drive of the car but the codes given with the package have not activated the software, so its exactly the same as it was when it went in ! why the hell they could not check this simple matter is beyond me. it now has to go in for 1-2 day again to be sorted out. its a nag update for gods sake ! this is getting tedious

i do have googlr maps but i dont find it that reliable, its ok in a good signal area but absolutely useless when there is no signal and no map for the area in the memory.

Hmm - if my understanding is correct, when you fire up Google maps, it downloads (within reason) your area of influence, routes, favourite locations etc and stores it. It then, updates itself as to what it thinks you need. If you're only travelling locally, then it utilises the data already stored on the hard drive, so it doesn't need any further download to operate. It will update when it needs or when you plot in a new navigation address and so on. As 2g & 3g now cover most of the UK this should prove reliable i'd have thought. I live in the sticks and have to say it fires up and is as up to date as i would expect it to be. The more you use it, the less it downloads, the more up to date your mapping.

most of my time is spend in northern europe, believe me it doesn't work. the screen is totally blank if there is no original mapping and no signal, hence having to do the expensive update.

I have this exact same problem when I updated mine. The maps were uploaded onto the HDD but it took 3 return visits for the update to actually install properly

The system downloads maps for a radius of 200km (if it has time and a signal) and rarely updates them again.

Also remember that the Google Map is just a picture shown over the installed maps. It does not contain any intelligence so it is possible to have a situation where Google Earth is showing a road yet the car has no idea said road exists. To me this made the Google Earth feature pretty useless.

The ONLY way to update the map data that the car uses to navigate is to install the Audi update

em being able to see the road on Google Earth strikes me as a benefit???

But if the sat nav won't/can't route you down it because it doesn't know it exists, unless you already knew the road was there, you would never be on it to see it.

Besides, where as Google Maps tend to be bang up to date, Google Earth images can be as old as 7 years

What versions are you having installed?

I've got MMI 3G+ and what's currently on my car is:
    Media version (MMI Firmware): HN+R_EU_AU_K0770
Nav. database version (Navigation Maps): 8R0060884AR ECE 6.15.5

From what I know, I've got the latest MMI firmware available, but there's a new map of:
Nav. database version (Navigation Maps): 8R0060884BK ECE 6.17.3

AFAIK, 6.17.3 actually came out pretty near the beginning of 2014... so I'm waiting for the next one after that to come out before I bother updating mine.

I was very fortunate about this. The dealer ordered in the SD card with the new maps on it, but then realised that they also needed to order in the activation codes. They waited until they had both before they got me to bring the car in .

This is correct. Google Maps is just showing the pretty satellite photos, and not actually using the Google Maps database.

I'm using a local new housing estate as a guide. Currently looks like Google Earth is 6 months behind reality. Still shows new entrance roads where G Maps has no idea. Re Firmware and Nav versions I guess my question remains is there any killer new feature which is missing from earlier versions.
