Coolant Issues - 2007 A3 1.9tdi Sport

Hope someone can help me as I'm no mechanic, for the past few months we have had the coolant light come on while driving or just after we switch on the engine. Some times the coolant is right at the bottom of the expansion tank or its just below the minimum line.

I was advised it could be an airlock which i tried a few times with the expansion cap off (i remove this slowly as i get a lot of air coming out and this can some times cause the expansion tank to fill up to the Max line or lower), engine running and squeezing the top pipe to try to release the air. This some times raises the level other times I need to top it up.

Today though the coolant light came on as we got home (50 mile round trip), checked the level and it was below the minimum line, do usual which worked, but I noticed that only the large fan was working and the smaller one was not spinning. Should the smaller fan be going round and if so could this be coursing the coolant issue.

Oh before i forget the car temp while running stays on 90

You need to bleed it where the heater pipes go into the car
