    Morning all

    S3 - 2011 S tronic - 30k

So not had any related issues recently which in some ways is good I suppose. Anyway started the car up this morning and the mrs says "oh, that doesn't sound normal" so instantly not only doe that annoy me but I also turned into the most insecure and paranoid person alive trying to listen to noise she could only explain as a rattling noise under the bonnet.

So causally driving I've got the music off trying to listen hanging out the window (she wants to talk naturally, that soon stopped) and it appears that when it's just idling it sounds very tinny. Driving can't notice anything but when stationary or just about to pull away it appears.

I'm going to give it a scan later but doubt anything will arrive from that. Maybe a possible belt that's slightly loose, but again nothing looked too obvious.

Any of the above sound familiar to anyone?
    Engine mounts? Er....

Have you checked your exhaust heat shield for looseness? It might need welding back up. I get this in my car when its fully loaded because my shield is a bit loose. On my to do list for quite some time now, over a year. Maybe an exhaust bracket.

Its worth monitoring your oil level, make sure its been serviced. Its staring to get colder, oil will be a bit more viscous in these temperatures - something to be aware of. As long as its topped up and relatively fresh oil you should be ok. Keep an eye on it though.

If its happening after its warmed up, I would be looking exhaust side first. Could be a loose bracket, you never know!

Is it chain or belt driven do you know? I'm not overly familiar with this car/engine.

Hi. I making an assumption here that your engine is the 2.0 TFSI unit. I know that early S3's had the same engine as the first TT's. The TFSI engine has a drive chain and not a belt like the older TT. My A3 1.8 TFSI engine sounds different to my wife's Mk.1 1.8T 225 bhp TT. The A3 makes a slight rattly noise which I was initially concerned about. When I mentioned it, strangely enough today, to my local Audi specialist I was told it's the drive chain mechanism and it's normal. The only noise from the TT is a gentle tick-tick from the hydraulic valve lifters.
Having said that the rattle from the A3 is not loud and can only barely be heard with the bonnet closed. It certainly isn't intrusive. So if you have a loud noise
that's suddenly developed and it sounds mechanical I'd get I looked at properly.

The car has lost it's responsiveness to the remap now too, there is a massive pause before the turbo kicks in where as before it was pretty quick to respond. It's like this in drive and sport modes.
