    Hi everyone.
I have owned my mk5 golf tdi 2007 for 1 year with no problems.
A few days while I was driving, white smoke started coming through the vents.
The interior fan then stopped working on speeds 1 2 and 3 but speed 4 still worked. No fuses had blown.
I did a Google search and it suggested that a resistor pack under the globe box was blown.
sure enough the resistor pack was burnt out, so I replaced it.
5 minutes later it burnt out again and fuse 40 (40 amp) blew.
I had now lost all speeds on fan.
So I thought it could be a faulty fan.
I then put a new resistor and a new fuse and a new fan.
The new fan only worked on speed 4, and the fuse blew when speed 1 was selected. Nothing happened on speed 2 or 3.
I put the old fan with the new resistor, and again it only worked on speed 4. The fuse blew on speed 1, but nothing happened on 2 or 3.
(I went through a lot of 40 amp fuses!)
To do a test, I disconnected the resistor and fan, and the fuse still blew when speed 1 was selected, but nothing happened on any of the other speeds.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
(PS the pollen filter is new and not blocked)
    Thanks

Is your coolant level dropping? Any moisture in there?

Well my coolant was slightly low yes, so I topped it up with maybe half a glass of g13.

I didn't find any moisture anywhere in car though.

Update: Car went into garage (a good independant garage that I have used many times in the past) on Wednesday morning. Now Saturday, car is still with them, and no solution has been found yet.

Update: Car has been with garage for 1 week. Garage has finally diagnosed an intermittent fault with the fan control switch (I have manual type fan controls with 3 rotating knobs)
There was nothing actually wrong with the original resistor - it was blowing because of the fault in the fan switch
There was nothing wrong with the old fan, so the old fan was put back in the car.
    Here come the costs:
new fan control switch module approx £140 inc vat
new resistor (genuine) approx £45 inc vat
diagnosis and fitting £350 inc vat
TOTAL COST £535 inc vat (!!)
    (included free courtesy car)
VW please design your cars better than this and stop using cheap components!
