Apologies for the multiple PMs!

The car apparently needs a synchro replacing but I have no more detail than that. Any luck with checking the gearbox version against the VIN please?

The syncro rings for 5^th and 6^th are the same and are an upgraded part number 02M 311 295 E out of the larger three shaft six speed 02M series gearboxes and the price I see is £38.03 each. Because the 02S gearbox is essentially a modified version of the 02A, which was designed as a 4 speed with 5^th tacked on so 6^th is also tacked on, in theory it is possible to dismantle the 5^th/6^th gear housing and the gears with the box still in the car but it is awkward and fiddly.

Hi Crasher, thanks for that. I have the Elsawin workshop manual so I twill take a look.

So to confirm it is an 02S gearbox? What troubles have you seen with them in general?

Yes, it is an 02S. The 02S 6 speed was a disaster when it first came out, failure was rife....
