    Apologies for the multiple PMs!

The car apparently needs a synchro replacing but I have no more detail than that. Any luck with checking the gearbox version against the VIN please?

    Cheers

The syncro rings for 5th and 6th are the same and are an upgraded part number 02M 311 295 E out of the larger three shaft six speed 02M series gearboxes and the price I see is £38.03 each. Because the 02S gearbox is essentially a modified version of the 02A, which was designed as a 4 speed with 5th tacked on so 6th is also tacked on, in theory it is possible to dismantle the 5th/6th gear housing and the gears with the box still in the car but it is awkward and fiddly.

Hi Crasher, thanks for that. I have the Elsawin workshop manual so I twill take a look.

So to confirm it is an 02S gearbox? What troubles have you seen with them in general?

    Thanks, Rob

Yes, it is an 02S. The 02S 6 speed was a disaster when it first came out, failure was rife....
