    Hi David

I had read on a couple of forums that the most likley causes are:

    1) corroded or loose immobiliser contacts
    2) pick-up coil around ignition or its connection to the immobiliser

    Immobiliser Starting Fault New Passat

When we spoke you were aware of these, have you had the time to investigate? The fact that it is intermittant indicates to me more a connection issue than a component outright failure.

Well, I have the steering column out and have done the tests on the switches and the are both working perfectly with no change in resistance during the switch cycle other than when the switch actually changes as per the details found on RichardSEL's excellent instruction write up, however the steering lock is stuck in the open position (steering lock off) so it would seem the fault is here.

Can this be released or does it mean a new lock mechanism?

    Thanks

    David

I can't follow what you say. If the switches cycle, the motor runs and the lock unlocks. So how do you perform "tests on the switches and the are both working perfectly with no change in resistance during the switch cycle" without the motor performing the cycle?

The answer is i was being a plonker and forgot to add the spring in between the plastic casing and the lock bolt its-self. Just had the faults cleared.
Lets see if this comes back
