My concern about running out of fuel on a common rail system is that the high pressure fuel pump uses the diesel as a lubricant.

A HPFP for a C7 2.0 TDi is £1K+ , plus at point of HPFP failure all the metal shavings can enter common rail accumulators and injectors.

Up in Yorkshire recently for Tour de France. Road closures meant easy access to filling stations not available. When it got to 0 and at least 30 miles from nearest diesel pump pulled into pub car park, called the RAC, spent 45 minutes having a 'shandy' and watching the cycling on their TV. RAC put 8 litres in and charged me £12. Well worth it.

I'm super cautious after my wife ran our C6 3.0 out of juice one time when it still said the range was 100 miles. Since then it never goes below that range without a can of diesel in the boot.

Yesterday we drove 20+ miles to Tesco to take advantage of 14p off each litre. 75 mile range and no warning light yet somehow I managed to get 78 litres in! Still trying to find its nominal capacity. (80 litres apparently)

I think the C7 is more accurate, but I still get jittery below 100 miles.
