I have a problem with a 1.9 PD 105ps (BXE code) on a 2007. Serious engine noise - so tore down the engine to reveal a broken con rod - it hadn't yet thrown but unbelievably a part of it has broken and I imagine it was a few revs from throwing out the side of the engine. The piston as actual a few mm proud of the top of the block and was hitting the head (valves closed so no damage to them).

I am not sure what to now do as I have researched the BXE engine code and so far so bad. It would seem that this one is the ugly duckling and has possibly a weaker bottom end. I don't want to go through the pain of replacing the con rod and getting it all back together for something else to follow. I have a few questions:

    - BXE - I understand that these are poor engines, or are they?
    - It looks like it is not a simple job to replace a BXE for another engine code such as AWX?
    - Should I be complaining to VW given that this must be a fault.....car is one owner with FSH - regular oil changes with the correct PD oil....

I think this was the BXEs weak point, there are loads of them failing all across the internet, seems BLS is not affected.

AWX is pre-PD I think so you'd have bother getting it to work in a MK5. No harm in contacting VW but if it doesn't have a full VW history then your chances of any goodwill are slim to none.

I think that I will get zero interest from VW. I have been researching this and it does seem to be a problem with BXE engines but as we know you only hear the horror stories and not the from the thousands that are ok. The price scappies want for these engines is high, what is it about them? Over a grand just for the block and car isn't worth a lot on an 07 anyhow.

Quite annoying, never mind the expense. I have had many PD units in Galaxys, Golfs, A4s etc, and none have skipped a beat until this one.

PS are you sure AWX is pre PD? I thought they were PD, and big numbers around 2003 ish.

awx is a pd, usually found in passats and has 130 bhp.
i don'tknow if the blocks are the same or not, i would imagine it could be made to fit. i would ask crasher , see if he knows. but if so, an awx would make it bulletproof for a lot less money.
