Anyone give me some advice on keeping tropical fish?

I've got the tank so apart from water and fish what do I need? Haven't got hundreds to spend so just the basics please.

    Hello.
You will need a heater with built in thermostat control, some sort of filter(side mounted sukers on the glass or undergravel filter bed),Gravel(stones) an the right fish food for your type of fish and an Air pump.
You will need the water to be upto temp an fully working in the tank for about a week with everything above on.Check your water an temp on a regular bassis.(water test kits are cheap).
Start with cheaper fish just until you get it all spot on.When your ready for fish, float the bag of fish on the top of the tank to climatise the fish(about 30mins-1hr) Dont pour the water the fish come in the bag into your tank. You could introduce disease from shop water to your own tank.
Can be tricky buggers to keep, but very calming when youve got it right.
    Good luck.
    Graham.

    You won't regret tropicalfish
I had a 6ft tank! Feed them a balanced diet when you get up and running. Things like cucumber and potato my fish loved. My fighter fish was quite partial to brine shimp and blood worm. When you get your tank settled keep a eye on water changes and disease.

I've seen a few mates buy fish off of eBay, make sure if you do your in for delivery and get the in the tank ASAP so they don't die! My fighter came from eBay and lasted forever!

Also a idea would be to get a Pleco. Depending on the size of your tank, they are good to keep your tank clean as they clean gravel etc

Tropical fish..... Cat TV. don't do what I did, build up a nice collection of diverse swimming things and then add a bag of new ones from a new pet shop without quarantine first, one tank of dead fish apart from a solitary Loach!
