    Hi,

I have a 2001 TDi 130 which has, for the last few years, always thought the driver's door was closed, so no reminders that the lights are left on and auto re-locking the car if I don't turn the key in time. After a spate of alarms going of intermittently I cleaned the plenum drains and checked the footwells. Footwells were dry so I put it all back together.

Shortly after this the driver's door went from being permanently closed, to occasionally open, complete with the warning beep going off as I drive. This became several warnings and bleats in a single trip and now registers as permanently open.

This has the side-effect of not being able to lock the car with the fob and prevents the display of useful information on the dash like mpg and fuel-range left etc.

I've seen the threads on the door module microswitches but it's a pain in the proverbial to get to and replace/solder etc so I'm biding my time for some decent weather and available time to replace it. VW just quoted me £147.xx for the lock mech - absolute joke!

So, my question is, is there a way to prevent the message appearing on the dash by pulling a fuse or disconnecting a wire without stripping the whole thing down and taking the glass out?

    Thanks in advance

    Aaron

Dont panic, I have changed all the locks on my 2005 Passat, about £28 off Ebay (only use pre 2005 locks though, they are a better design) and no trouble to change if you follow the instructions, make sure you seal the lower foam strip when you put the plate back on to stop water ingress.

The pre 2005 locks have a green cover, the 2005 have a white cover.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Ordered a mech on ebay and now tearing door apart. Have hit a major problem in that I cannot remove the lock cylinder :-(

I removed it a few years ago when I adjusted the tension of the outer handle but now it won't budge. Even got the glass out but now burgered with the cylinder. T20 loosened correctly but no movement, tried to grip it with the key, a screwdriver round the edges, even broke the metal key insert cover off!

Any ideas before I start beating the carp out of it with a hammer?

    Cheers

    Aaron

The screw has to be unscrewed all the way until it is stopped by the wire projecting down its head (don't turn too hard or you will bend the wire and the screw will drop out). put a little masking tape on the door and use a small
screw driver to ease the surround while pulling the door handle towards you.

    Thanks, but...

no amount of pressure - screwdriver under the surround, mole-grips on the cover, pulling of key in the lock will budge it.

Tried with the screw removed as well, but that may just be part of the problem.

So are you saying that the wire (which I have spotted with a torch in the hole) should be on the outer side of the screw and pulled-out by the unscrewing motion? If so, could I just grip the wire with a pair of pliers and pull toward the opening in the end of the door and pull the cylinder out that way? Or, if I re-load the screw and get the wire to rest between the screw-head and the opening it will work again?

    Thanks

    Aaron
