So I did my research, was aware that multitronics gave problems, but spotted a nice 2003 A6 1.9 TDi Estate in UK last week and traveled over from Irl to purchase. But NOT before I gave the very reputable auto transmission specialists in Scotland a shout (to see exactly what work they had done on the car in 2011 ... when it received a reconditioned gearbox and new dual mass flywheel). Reassurance from them, and a one owner history from new ... and a perfectly behaving car during the test drive led me to purchase.
And now the problem ... at a typical cruising speed of approx 60mph, or indeed anywhere around 1400-1800 rpm, the car gives an ever so slight jerk or chuck, every maybe 15 seconds or so, but not at all regular. I can see the rev counter needle going up by about 200 rpm then every time it does this too. And if I put the car into cruise control, at 1800 rpm, then it still does this.
I had the car with an automatic transmission specialist in Dublin and he "thinks" it might be the forward clutch ... but I have only learned in the meantime that the car had the 7 plate upgrade in 2011 (25000 miles ago), when it received its reconditioned gearbox in Scotland. Up to then, and before I'd gone to the specialist in Dublin, I wasnt sure whether maybe the people in Scotland had done nothing with the clutch. £1250 plus VAT is what the guy in Dublin wants for doing the forward clutch.
And as I say, I've been in touch with the Scottish specialists since being in Dublin with the car and they reckon it CAN'T be the clutch, because it's been done by them so recently ... AND, they think from my description that it may "need to be reconditioned" or else maybe "a faulty dual mass flywheel". Obviously, it's hard for the guy in Scotland to diagnose the problem over the phone, but as I said to him ... "how could it need reconditioning, when it was only done 25000 miles ago"???
So now I am absolutely stuck. I don't know which way to turn, or who to put my trust in ... or who is actually confident that they can solve the problem ... without absolutely cleaning me out of any few pennies I have.
I would greatly greatly appreciate any help or feedback from any of you on this please. I am sick to the core that I have been stung like this, despite ALL of my efforts and research to pick what I thought was a decent car.

Hmm, I think I'll just reply to myself on this one. So I decided to go for the cheapest fix, for a start, and see whether that went any way towards solving my problem. Got gearbox oil changed and hey presto...car was immediately way way better. I'd say it's probably 85-90% per cent better than it was and the problem I was experiencing is pretty much gone ... but not completely, I am sorry to admit. But the way it is, I can live with it.
