    Hi Guys

I am meant to be heading down to Birmingham for the chipped UK thing so i decided tonight to change the fuel filter on 2.5 V6 Diesel A4, looks simple enough 20 mins till it gets dark thought i, plenty of time.

Got filter changed over connected up and i refilled with about 400ml of diesel that came out of old filter.

Started engine up, ran for 5 seconds then stalled. It now will not start. On looking at the fuel lines after the filter they appear empty .

Any suggestions on how to prime the system again. If I fill the filter with fuel would that be enough to drag the fuel through.

    Any advice much appreciated

    Ron

Try cracking the nuts loose on a couple of the injectors and cranking till fuel appears.

This should help purge any air.

Also ensure the lower water drain and top bleed bolt are tight.

I always put as much fuel as possible in the new filter before fitting.

Finally got to the bottom of the problem , The new fuel filter (Guttman) supplied by Eurocarparts is faulty.

Tried everything to bleed the system. turns out there is a tiny fracture somewhere in the filter casing causing it to take on board air after it has been bled.

Switched back to the old filter, problem solved

Cheers for advice, it did get the motor started but only until the next air lock appeared

    Hi

I ended up getting a diesel mechanic to check it all over. His first thought when he saw air getting into fuel lines was the external seals on the filter. But on checking them it turned out to be fine.

He spent about an hour on it before he reckoned he'd tracked it down to faulty manufacture on the new filter.

As soon as we slotted old filter back on and cranked the engine (by this time on jump leads) air locks gone and engine is now running fine

I don't feel quite so bad, I'm usually pretty good with stuff like that but just hadn't reckoned on a fault in the new part. Mechanic reckoned it was unusual as well, as he'd checked everything possible before switching the filter .

    Cheers

    Same problem on mine,

one of the guys suggested you just keep trying to start and it eventually starts.

It did, after a burst of 15 seconds (and an overnight halt to proceedings so as not to annoy neighbours)

I've forgotten who it was (search the posts in my name) but they said they usually flatten the batteries after a fuel filter change they need that much cranking.

It worked on mine, take or leave it.
