    Hi,
Looking for some info if you can help at all. I have a 2001 GOLF, that need its gaitor replaced. This is fine , my problem is I need to remove the gear stick top to get in on properly and i cant see how i can do this. There is a ring around the shaft of the stick, but no clips or any obvious way of releasing the top of the stick. Can it be done easily ??
    Cheers.

Lift the boot right up and you will find a crush clamp rather like a fuel hose clamp. Open up the crush section and the knob will come away, re crush the section to re-secure.

Hey thanks for the reply, just to be sure, your saying i uncrush the ring on the gear stick itself that i can see and recrush afterwards to secure. Just when you mentioned the boot i was a little off.

Yes, the crush clamp at the base of the knob under the boot. Open up the crush section with a flat blade screwdriver.

i was just looking at this thread as i am changing the gaitor on my new mk4 and it has been raised that you're having trouble getting into 1st and 2nd gears.

i have the same problem and find it difficult at times to get into these gears. i was wondering what the problems could be??

    i have a V reg 1999, 1.4 mk4

    any help would be great

Anything from a simple alignment problem to a faulty clutch or even a faulty gearbox. I suggest you start a new thread over this and go into some depth about the problem.
