2010 A6 Qauttro Avant swivelling towbar problem

Hi,
The Pull and Twist release knob for the swivelling towbar option in the boot cubby won't Pull and when twisted in it's un-pulled position makes the led flash red but goes back to green when released. The towbar stays locked in it's away position while the red led is flashing. There is no visible damage to the knob or the tow hitch. The dash message says check trailer hitch bracket (approx wording.). I don't have a use for it currently (Didn't know it had it until I bought the car), however I might start looking for a sailing dinghy to tow. Anyone had this problem before I invest in a trip to the dealer?
