A friend of mine has a 2000 Beetle and the indicators are being very erratic as in flashing too fast and sometimes not at all. Most of the posts I have read point towards the hazard switch as that is where the relay is but I did follow someone else's idea and sprayed contact cleaner in and around the stalk which did temporally fix the problem. This says to me the problem is with the stalk and not the hazard relay. Can any confirm this as logical thinking? I said I would have a look tomorrow but don't really want to replace a part that doesn't have to be ie hazard switch or stalk. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi mrlindley

I have had a similar problem, and have fixed it by taking out each of the indicators in turn, cleaning the contacts at the back of the lamp and the contact arround the lamp. I have then put a light smear of silicon grease, available from RS components, and reassembled. The frequency of the flash relies on the resistive load of the circuit, hence when a lamp goes the load reduces and the frequency increases.

    hope this helps
