    Hi All,
Not been on here for a while but getting desperate and ALMOST ready to go to the dealers - thats how bad it is !

    Original R reg 1.9 engine went bang : (

Fitted another afn 1.9tdi engine - since fitting it starts like **** but when running goes like a dream - it will only start with the CTS sensor disconnected.

I originally thought it was a sensor fault - have tried three different ones........

The temp gauge never gets over sixty (does not move) I think the thermostat MAY have been removed, but plenty of heat from heaters......

When HOT after a good run the car will start instantly but from cold even with the glow plugs forced into extreme start mode (and cycled three or four times by unplugging the CTS) it is a nightmare to start and getting worse.....

When running it is lovely all good - approx 200 miles for £30 diesel so not sure on economy.

I can only assume the pump timing is out - static timing ????

Does anyone have VCDS access in south Wales and / or tdi experience that can help ? Am I right in thinking this engine can only have the timing adjusted by VCDS ???

Coincidentally I noticed yesterday BOTH rear brake lights are out - they were not before doing the engine swap - weird !

ANY HELP much appreciated folks, can travel to someone who can and will sort you out with a few quid too

    Cheers,

    Jon.

    Check pump timing.
WARNING!!!! DOING ANY KIND OF WORK ON A RUNNING ENGINE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!

For a rough idea of where the timing is at remove the top timing belt cover and the rocker cover and set the engine on the timing marks. if they are out by 1 tooth or more loosen the tensioner and adjust the timing via cam or pump.. if the timing is out by 1/2 a tooth or less loosen the pump and start the engine after removing the timing tools and slowly rotate the pump. Listen to the sound of the engine when it's close to being on on the timing you can tell by the sound. Turn the pump towards the engine to advance and away from the engine to retard the timing. If you're nervous about doing this loosen the pump bolts adjust pump by 1 mm or so and tighten bolts. Then start the engine. Do this with a cold engine. If you have a dial gauge you can do a more accurate job on the timing, there's loads of write-ups around.. VCDS won't set the timing on a VP pump.
After you have the car timed properly, tighten the pump and tensioner to the correct torque refit and tighten the covers and if needed apply to the NHS for a skin graft for your knuckles!
