    First the car details -- - 1997 A6 1.8T AEb engine
I stalled the car the other day and it shuddered making an awful noise, since then
I have trouble engaging first and reverse gears. Once on the move gear selection is no problem it’s only when I stop to select reverse or first gear that it is very difficult to engage and sometimes I have to switch the engine off to be able to select the gear. Any ideas guys. Regards Geoff.

You may have a broken engine or gearbox mount, very close inspection required. Regards Peter

Thanks for your reply Peter, your input is much appreciated.
How many engine and gearbox mounts are there? I looked at two yesterday but difficult to see anything wrong. How do I tell if they are broken? Regards Geoff.

Two one each side I would suspect the left gearbox support bonded rubber mounting may have split. You will have to jack the gearbox up to see if the mount fas split or the bond failed. Regards Peter

UPDATE ON Gear Selection after engine stall
I checked out the gearbox mountings and all OK Then had a look at the gear linkage, The linkage between the gear leaver and box has 2 adjustment bolts, one arm of the linkage is static and the adjustment just moves the gear leaver back and forth, the other arm does the gear change.I played about with the adjustment on this and some how managed to get it to change much better, its not perfect as I don't think I have found the sweet spot yet but will leave for now as I managed to slightly round off the inside of the 6mm hex bolt and need to find a new one before having another go. Thanks for your help guys.
    Regards Geoff.
