    History.
Stopped (for good) in Europe 2 months ago after cutting out intermittently and 'kangarooing' for a few miles. Wouldn't start, Flashing heater light. Recovered to local (non-VW) garage and new heater relay fitted. Started and ran so journey continued. Stopped again as before in Holland. Shipped to England on ferry, AA man found no supply to stop solenoid so 'hot-wired' it and it started but he advised new stop solenoid. Fitted. Started and ran OK for a couple of weeks. Then heater light started flashing again about 20 saconds after starting. Now it's just let me down again.

    Symptoms now.
Sometimes won't start. If stop solenoid is hot wired from battery, it starts immediately and continues to run even if hot wire is removed. It may then start without hot wire - but may not!

When it does run, it will only run on fast tick-over - about 1200 rpm - unless you start it with the accelerato pedal pressed, when it runs fairly normally, but returns to only fast tickover if you taske your foot off the pedal. Driveable if you can get it running above tickover, but very flat and powerless. Smokey, too.

    Diagnostics:
Only 1 code - needle valve sensor open/short circuit (intermittent). Checked needle valve on No 3 injector. Resistance 90 ohms so not SC or open circuit. Checked wires from ecu. Ignition off: no continuity between them. Ignition on: one earthed, one at 2.5 to 3.0 V (slight fluctuation, even with engine not running)., so it's not SC OR OC (???) Disconnecting the plug with engine running (at fast tickover) causes no change to exhaust note so needle vavle apparently doing nothing - or its signal not being received by ecu.

Advised to fit new No 3 injector & sensor (£90 + S/H, £260 new) and crankshaft speed sensor (£23 new). (But not sure why!)

Please supply wisdom before I spend more money - this is a great economical runabout if only it would stop misbehaving!

There doesn't seem to be a Haynes manual for this engine - does anyone know of one?

    Tony.
