I have a 2 litre petrol B6 with 65000 miles on the clock. It is using alot of oil! Was doing about 1000 miles to a litre, but I have just put a litre in today and it has only done 600 miles!!!

There are no leaks, and as far as I can tell it is not smokey.

    Any suggestions please?

    Colin

This may be a one of.If its running OK I would check the level more often and add smaller amounts more regularly .If it gets any worse it will need investigating

You say its not smoking but sometimes its hard to tell from rear view mirror. Have you checked tail pipe deposits for signs of oil? Check breather system too, it may be choked up.

Mikeybutch, no it is not a one off. It is getting worse!

Alan02, if the breather is blocked will it burn oil? Where does the breather system run on the B6 and how do you clean it?

    Thanks

DEpends what you mean by worse. What is it normally and how quickly is increasing?I used to check for oil burning by letting it idle when hot and then standing where you can see and revving the engine.Any blue smoke is oil burning

OK, the history. I bought the car with about 62500 miles on it. put 1l in at 63020. Another 1l at 65012 and then another 1l at 65670.

It think that is getting worse!

So back to my original question where is the oil going, and why?

My gut feeliing is it is burning it in the usual way (valve stem seals or piston rings - probably piston rings for the quantity you're talking about). The reason you're not seeing it is that the Audi engines have close-coupled catalytic converters with very high light-off temperatures. These are very good at cleaning up the smoke from the exhaust.

Two real world examples are that my very first Audi was an Audi 80 Sport with a 2.0 "Tall Block" engine that used to drink oil like petrol. The tailpipe was litterally spotless (you could run your finger around it with no carbon) but one day the downpipe sheared. I found out where my oil was going; as under the bonnet (before the CAT) the exhaust was smoking like an old hag, together with that acrid burning oil smell.

Secondly, my current A4 B8 has just had the pistons and rings changed under warranty because of high oil consumption. Again clean tailpipe and no smoke at all. The new pistons and rings have done the trick.

There is usually a specification in the owners handbook of what use to expect.I would only be concerned if it was higher and getting worse
