    Hi All,

I need to have the timing belt replaced on my '02 Passat 1.9TDI. I want to be able to buy the required parts myself and give them to the mechanic to install (basically, I want to avoid them adding markups from their own suppliers). I need to know:

    a) what 'bits' do I need and,
    b) where to buy them from.

    Any help would be greatly-appreciated.

    Cheers . . . IIB.

    Hi,

As far as I know you need the cambelt, tensioner and rollers. To ensure you get the correct ones you will need to find your engine code, 3 digits, something like ASZ.

Various parts suppliers, if it were me I'd get genuine VAG ones, do a search on ebay, there are dealers selling them for around £65, I've used the VW dealer in Dudley via ebay and they were okay and charged very reasonable postage.

Just be sure that whoever fits them really knows what they are doing. Also phone around VW dealers and get quotes, I found the prices vary alot from £300 to £450 for the same job from VW dealers.

If you are near Jabba, they do the job for around £300 from memory, they are a really good bunch and know there stuff.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck.

    Andy

You will need the belt, idler roller an tensioner. Do not under any circumstances purchase a non vag (vw) kit as this can be purchased for around £55 plus vat from vw. You will also require special tool no t10050 which will lock the cranckshaft in place. I dont think its possible to complete the renewal without this tool as it has the line up marks for the crankshaft at tdc.Be warned though as the front lock carrier and the bumper need to be removed to complete the belt renewal.

Thanks guys. My experience matches what Andy's telling me. VW dealerships vary wildly but I've found one and brought him down to £300. Originally he was quoting £360. I think on this occasion, I'll leave it VW to sort out.
