Hi there. Have just parted with my beloved A3 sportback tdi Quattro. Have acquired a 2007 A6 3.0 tdi allroad, with 255/35 19's on 2 piece rims

Looks like my 15" winter wheels with 195/60 Mich alpin tyres will no longer fit.....

Any advice on the most suitable wheel / tyre for winter use please?

Guessing that 17" is probably the smallest wheel that will fit over the big front discs?

Not too bothered about looks for the winter, but need to keep those 2 piece rims away from the salt....

You are quite right that 17inch are the smallest wheels that will fit over the front brakes.
I bought a set of used alloys from an advert on Pistonheads and fitted 225/50 R17 tyres.
If you lift the fuel flap on your car, the sticker will tell you that these are the suggested winter tyre sizes.
If you are shopping for used alloys, this online calculator will make sure that you get the right offset wheels for your car

Which brand of tyres to buy is very subjective and recommendations vary depending on which review site / publication you read.

    Thanks for that.
    You have confirmed my thoughts.

As you say tyres are a matter of taste, I have to say that my A3 ran very well on PS2 and 3 during the summer getting 35 k ish per set. Then mich alpin for the winter which made it virtually unstoppable as far as I was concerned, plus saving the two piece rims from the salt and expensive refurbs every couple of years.

Off to look for some wheels.....
