Hi All, Have a faulty abs pump and am looking to replace with a second hand unit. Does the suffix on the end of the part number have to be the same? eg 149885 5589 "HK" (random numbers!)
I know the rcl pumps can be interchanged provided the number is the same, just wondered if its the same case with this.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

From my experiences the suffix on the end is the revision of the part and should still be compatable as long as the number are the same. So the higher the letter usuall the younger it is and probably better designed, ie any problems have been ironed out with the design. I did this with a tandem pump for my 2002 a4, found a 2007 B7 1.9 still used the same type just with different gasket.

if the suffix number ends in x this is an exchange unit otherwise the other letter must be the same unless superseded by something else and this will show up in Elsa as an example 8E0614517L is an abs unit for front wheel drive vehicles 8E0614517M is a unit for 4-6cyl quattro and 8E0614517R is a unit for 8cyl quattro as you see they have the same part number but fit entirely different vehicles

I'am wondering who the tosh is read it yourself
The last bit of the example part number, the letter C, refers to one of two things EITHER THE VERSION OF THE WING, or if a part has been modified in general VERSION means to suit a specified engine, gearbox, etc etc

OK i concur. But a better explaination would of been: 3d0 601 025p This is a version or revision code. In this example it's "p". If it's included it's usually one or two letters. Sometimes a revised part comes out or it's slightly different on models with different engines. A newer version doesn't mean the old version isn't the newest one that will work on your car. They will use a, b, c., etc., but also skip letters. Sometimes they name them aa, ab, ac, etc. Usually the newer part has a later letter. If it's "x" it means the part is rebuilt.

Give me a 8E0614517R and i'll fit it to my A4 no problem, i'll then have brake wipe, ability to completely disable the traction contol at all speeds with ESP 8.0!

The pump you fitted is not compatible as the part number is different. You will need to get hold of a 3C0 614 095 M,N,P,Q or S
