newbie . Audi A4 2003 2.5 tdi , almost braking itself from 2nd to 1st gear HELP

hi all , new to forum and hope someone can help , i have an audi automatic a4 2.5 tdi 2003 . the esp light is on and if your driving along and slowing down you dont even have to touch the brakes when it changes from second down to first gear and it almost jolts you forward , its quite harsh , anyone know what this could be , i put it into a local garage and they had no idea, all they did was road test it and confirmed what i already knew , the only other thing to mention which is probably relevant is wewent away on 2 weeks holiday in the summer and when we returned i noticed a dead rat under the car and it had build itself a next under the bonnett at the bulkhead in front of the driver , could it be wiring related ? , i am absolutely clueless with cars , this is the wifes car and she loves it but i am worried i may have a gearbox fault and am so worried about a huge bill i am almost thinking of selling it before it goes bang , any help would be so much appreciated

Scan the car for faults to see what is causing the ESP to stay on.
Check the brakes for a stuck caliper.
