My current Golf is the first Diesel engined car I've owned I understand that you should get the oil changed about once a year or (10k miles). What's the usual cost of an oil change?

when topping up myself in between should I use a specific type (1.9 TDI)?

Sorry if this is a simple question.

Adam is correct. I use Castrol Edge 5W/30. You can find some good deals on line particularly if you bulk buy. Avoid places like Halfords unless you are desparate.

Just had my wifes Passat oil + filter changed using the correct spec oil ( I asked twice!! ) at National tyres!!!

I honestly don't think I could have bought the oil + filter and done it myself any cheaper, then of course there's all the hassle too.
National tyres did mine for £31.70 iirc

I don't think they make any money on it, in fact it may even cost them money....its a get you through the door so I can sell you tyres / exhausts etc thing.
Go online and check it out.....once at the National tyres website just type in your reg and it finds your car and the oil spec offered pops up along with the price!!

    Hi,
Still cheaper than a new engine, i recommend you check your oil level every week, only topping up when the light comes on in my opinion is madness.

the low level light comes on as you get close to the min mark, and if it gets to low the engine wont start, mine use's about a lt to 7000 miles which TBH isnt that bad
