Glad I could help. To get at the washer hose in the engine, you usually need to remove the airfilter box.
To remove the winder handle, rotate it so the knob is at the bottom. Now put your fingers under the base ring where the winder handle meets the door trim panel and lift. The base ring should slide upwards and you can now slide the winder handle off (towards you).
(EDIT :- Just found a video on another thread showing how to remove the handles. This guys is stuck, but they normally come off without any problems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5T6h5H0NEY)

Although the washer hose is off in the engine bay, also check it behind the N/S boot trim and at the rear wiper motor. It usually comes off at all three points. You can get little hose clips to resecure the fittings from your VW dealer.

    Jim.

If you remove the front 'grill' thingy (where the fog light goes) by unlatching it towards the centre, you can reach around to reattach it. Re the doors, you need to slip the ring that's next to the door card in the direction away from the handle.

On my 02 Polo to get to the pump and some hoses i went through the wheel arch, unscrew a few and away you go.
I gather its very popular for the part of the pump which directs the water to fail, generally being the rear side. It disconnects from the bottom of the pump and has the hoses attached to it. It is a cylinder with 2 inlets on the top - where the hoses from the pump/bottle go and 2 outlets onthe ends where the hoses go off. Pop it off (make sure you take note which way round).
    .
Run a tap gently over it and you'll notice the water goes in the inlet and out the outlet, if it doesn;t do that on the rear side, as mine didn't then a new one (pump set) shall be needed.

Thanks everyone for the helpful posts and for taking the timeout to reply. Since I applied the silicon sealant we have not seen any puddles but I guess we need to wait for couple of months to be 100% sure.

I still need to reattach the rear screen washer hose pipe, cant seem to motivate myself for removing the air filter box or through the wheel arch. I might try to remove the grill and see if I get anywhere!

Not quite sure where you mean for the ABS pump, but to remove the window winders you move the ring that's between the arm of the winder and the door card away from the arm. The whole thing then slides off.

The rear lamp lens housing seals harden with age and loose their elasticity / compressability . If you try to buy just the seal from VW it's only available as part of the complete lens assembly ! nearly £40 !
As bulbs don't last forever you would think VW would supply just the seal on its' own .
