    .
Apologies, my initial explanation was not very clear. I first noticed the changes in revs when in 'D' and it just didn't feel like a full on change of gear, just a change in revs. So I used the Tip to change manually from 1st to 2nd and keep it in 2nd and watch the revs. Doing this I could see that the revs would rise up to about 2500rpm then dip back a couple of hundred during acceleration, whithout a change into 3rd. A similar thing seems to happen in 3rd also, but to a lesser extent. It may well be a normal function of the gearbox, just not sure really.

May be a bit off the wall - have you checked state of battery? I had a flat battery after parking for a week at Heathrow - after a boost the alternator was also knackered so had to get a relay home. The symptoms you describe sound similar to what I was experiencing before this episode, however, since charging the battery up and installing a new alternator, apart from being a lot poorer in the wallet department, my gear changes appear to be a lot smoother in the lower gears than they were. just a thought...

Hmmm....interesting. When I bought the car, the previous owner said the battery was less than a year old. When I checked it, it seems too small for the compartment, so may not be up to spec. I think it is a type 096, rated at 72AH. Is this adequate, what rating battery should it be?

I don't wish to scare you but I suggest the gearbox oil change is done sooner rather than later. I had exactly the same issues with mine (without the clunk between gears but same slipping) and mine just gave up on the motorway cruising. Now I need a replacement box! Very expensive for a car worth only 3.5K.

Thanks for the heads up. My 2 post lift is being installed on Monday, and I have VAG COM now, so will hopefully get the fluid changed soon.
