Firstly, Hi everyone - I'm new here but have been browsing the site for a while now.

I have an A6 2.8 v6 quattro (2000) which I can no longer get to start. I had it idling a few days ago to warm up (-10 here at the moment!) When I went to drive off, the engine died and I can no longer get it to start.

When turning the ignition, the engine chugs away and almost starts but doesn't quite fire. With the foot to the floor and turning the ignition for about 30 seconds it briefly started but soon died out again.

I've had a friend look at it and we could see that the Spark plugs are firing OK, there are no fuses blown and we undid the fuel line and when turning the ignition, no fuel cam through.

He has suggested a new fuel pump but before buying a new one I just wanted to check if this sounded right or if there were any other things I could do to try and diagnose the problem.

    Thanks

It does sound like the fuel pump is not delivering fuel but I would make sure it had power before fitting a new one.

Thanks Crasher. Is there an easy way to do that? Am I right in thinking the fuel pump is under the back seats?

It is inside the fuel tank, accessed through a panel under the back seat. The fuel tank MUST be no more than ¼ full when tying to remove the pump.

Thanks again Crasher - I've now got the back seat out and located the fuel pump - is there a way of testing it to see if this is actually the problem before buying a new one?

Has it got power when cranking and does it pump fuel if it has?

Thanks for all the help on this - I checked everything and it definitely points to the fuel pump. There is power getting to it but it makes no sound at all.

Am I able to ask on here a good place to get replacement parts online?

    Thanks again

Assuming it is an ALG or AQD engine without an auxiliary heater, I think the part number is 8E0 906 087 and the system says you will need O ring 4B0 201 844 and the note,

on k-pumps with vertical connections on sealing flange, there may be some instances where 90 degree quick fastener 4B0 201 406 has to be used

According to my work trade system this fuel pump is available aftermarket from a few different manufacturers.
