I have a 1.4 petrol Golf that the speedo has stopped working on.

I believe the speedo is driven by a sensor on the back of the gearbox.

The clutch was replaced a while ago, and the speedo wasn't working when I got it back. I took the car back, they fiddled with the wire, and it was working again.

I drove it for a few weeks, and sometime during that time, the speedo would occasionally drop to 0 mph. Then it stopped working altogether.

I thought it was related to the clutch change - perhaps the sensor was damaged in the work, but I took it back to your man, and he put a spare sensor in, and it didn't change the situation. I suppose he could have given me a dodgy spare sensor?

Do the speedos go bad in these cars, or is it almost 100% likely to be a dodgy sensor????

I have the NCT tomorrow morning, so looks like I will be rescheduling...

    many thanks in advance.

Possibly damaged wiring under the battery.

So I pulled the battery out, and had a quick look. The wiring loom looks like its been exposed a little to the effects of the battery, but doesnt look too bad at all.

Crasher, when you say damaged wiring under the battery, do you reckon I'd have to pull the loom apart to see the damage? Is it common, or known to happen is it, that the wiring under the battery deteriorates? Speedo is the only thing not working. Do you know if the clock is prone to failing? Is it coded to the car, or can I just bung a new one in from the wreckers? If it is coded, is it difficult to recode??

I suppose I would. NCT is 830 am tomorrow, so am going to fail, but at least I'll know if anything else needs doing.

Yes you have to dig in there and find the white/blue to the speedo sensor and check that the black/green to the sensor has an ignition live and that the brown has an earth.
