If it's not the cable, then I guess you have to leave it to Audi or a specialist.

Can anyone with experience of this issue recall where the damage occurs to make finding it easier?

Also found this TSB which may not be relevant if the cable is damaged !!

    Hi,

I had same problem last year (Audi A6 3.0TDI quattro, 2005 model) and found out parking brake cable was broken at connector near the wheel. Root cause is that this is a design flaw from Audi; cable is actually a bit (too) short. When changing winter and summer tyres (wheels in my case), the wheel comes out of its suspension maximally, thus stretching the wire to the max. This results over time in cable breaking internally (so insulation still ok, but feels weak when moving).

    I fixed it by:
    1. unplugged the connector (first unlock the connector mechanically by shifting a part!) and cut it from the cable, to take it to my workbench. Note the wiring colours to ensure you connect it rightly later!!!
    2. then took out the metal connector pins (pay attention to push the little barb preventing it from coming out normally),
    3. soldered an extra piece of (thick enough, high currents!) wire to the connector pins
    4. assembled the connector again and took that back to my car
    5. soldered the wire to the original cable and plugged it in again.
Note: if you ask you Audi garage to fix it, then they will replace the complete cable assembly which runs right to the front of the car, i.e. cost you a few 100s of Euros at least!

Last week I appeared to have the same problem, but that was different. Indeed it was due to hot brakes when switching on the car after a coffee brake during a long drive in the French heat, see http://uberlame.com/a6_tsb/Brakes/El...%20release.pdf, 'Customer's manner of use' (thanks for the hint, apole!!). That was easy to fix :-).
