  1. Electro-magnetic parking brake at high speed

    tester Guest
I was speaking with an audi salesman the other day discussing the electro-magnetic parking brake on the B8 A4.

I asked him "What would happen if I activated it whilst the car was moving?"
He said "It behaves just like an ordinary hand brake sir",
I said "You've got to be having a laugh mate, surely it won't come on at 70mph?"
He quickly changed the subject and started waffling about something else.

So I turn to you, the guys in the know. What will happen if the electro-magnetic parking brake is activated when the car is not stationary?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, I'm just getting to know me new motor.

I would guess the computer knows you are travelling at high speed and over ride the handbrake applying. I wouldn't like to test it out I've seen how grippy the brake is when stationary.

First up, it's electromechanical, not electromagnetic.

If you pull and hold the switch while the car is in motion, it performs an emergency stop. Its meant to be a safety feature.

    From the Manual ()

To stop the vehicle with the parking brake in an emergency, pull and hold the parking brake switch.
The brakes will be released immediately if you release the switch or press down the accelerator.

If you pull out and hold the parking brake switch at a road speed above about 8 km/h, this will initiate an emergency brake application. The brakes are then applied hydraulically at all four wheels. The effect is the same as an emergency stop (full brake application)
    WARNING!
To prevent the emergency braking function from being used accidentally, a warning buzzer sounds when the switch is operated. The brakes are released immediately when you release the switch or press down the accelerator.

Many thanks guys for the information guys, I guess I should really ready the manual.

The manual for my MY1999 A4 was about 15 pages. The manual for my MY2008 is +100! Think about what the manual will be like for MY2020!!

There is already - not sure what you need to get it but I have it. Never used it. Takes up one of the 6 CD slots.

On 2G it takes up a slot and runs dog slow if you use it.
On 3G you import it and then remove the disk....and it runs at a decent speed.

It's this CD that I exported and you can download and run on your PC.
