i had the same prob with mine apparently its a common fault and unfortunatly i had to smash my grill up then undo the 3 bolts then remove small switch which is for the window wipers then lift the bonnet with the bonnet realese catch still connected ,you will find a small black box just above the drivers side head light this is where your cable has probably snaped its an easy fix and costs around £5 from your local vw

hope this helps p.s becareful with the small switch this is to imobalise the window wipers so that when the bonnet is open the window wippers wont work its a saftey precaution
pps you can get front grills off ebay for around £15

I have the same problem in that I cannot open the bonnet. I can see the end of the cable and it has become loose from wherever it was attached and now pulling it makes no difference. Don't suppose you could describe where abouts the unlock mechansim is? I am trying to release the mechanism through the hole left from removing the vw badge.

    thanks
