    Hi all,

Thought I'd better come here before I went to a garage and got my pants pulled down...

Basically, I've got a 54 plate 2.0TDI manual A6, with one of those damned electronic parking brakes. About a month ago it refused to come off, I switched the car off, went into the house for a bit and tried again, it was fine. fastforward to 2 weeks ago and it sticks on in Sainso's whilst I'm out for lunch.
Then again last week it refused to come off for 2 or 3 hours of trying, I parked it in gear and left it - the brake appears to have released from the disc (or whatever it operates on) but the warning light is still showing and I get beeped at 3 times everytime I start the car, very annoying!

Now we're a week later, I've got a big white sticker over the switch so I don't get tempted to use it, but the constant warning I get means I can't use my OBC on the dash, and lets be fair it's a pain not being able to use the park brake.

I've seen plenty of things on the net, but seemingly no definitive answer. It could be the brake module (yet the rear right one turns off...) It could be the calliper itself, it could be both, it could be neither... Does anyone know of an almost definite cause? I like to go to garages with an inkling of the problem so they don't just tear it apart and replace loads of things, so if any of you could advise on what i need to be requesting/quoting etc that would be great?
Also, in the event that I do need to replace the caliper and/or the brake control module, any idea of a cost on that?

    Cheers All.

    Ryan

On the early 4F A6 it is often a failed wiring harness at the caliper, water gets in and the wires corrode. You have to buy a new harness section from Audi (which has an improved plug) and run it through into the boot and cut and solder it in.

Ah OK, presume I'm better off going to a specialist rather than an Audi main dealer for that?

It depends if the specialist is happy doing wiring, not all. The work splicing the harness into the new section is quite delicate as it includes the ABS wiring and the colour codes have changed so you are joining different coloured wires together, which have to be checked.

Cheers. I popped up to the local Audi dealer today (Taunton) and they were very helpful. It'll be £55ish (half hours labour) for the diagnostic check, then £55 if it is the harness that needs changing. Assuming 2 hours to wire it all in (am I being a bit hopeful there?) that's £300+ vat which isn't too bad I suppose.

I see you're an official sponsor, do I presume that means you do a lot of work with Audi's?

Not only does he do a lot of work, he seems to know everything about them, and somehow finds time to help us all out on here aswell!

I wish I did know everything about VAG products, if I knew 10% of everything my life would be that much easier but it is such a huge subject no one person could know everything about the entire VAG product base.

The harness takes me just over an hour to fit.
