I had this problem also when changing fuel filter - did not make any difference when filter was full of diesel, it still would not start. Spent hours, battery re-charge trying to start and no luck. Easy, simple solution was to connect an in-line electric pump between the fuel filter and the diesel injection pump and run this in-line pump when cranking the engine. Pushed lots of fuel and air through the system and engine fired up in about 10 Secs. My in-line pump was small but quite powerful and had to pulse it (ie. switched it on for a few secs then off, then on etc.) to avoid putting too much pressure into the system.
My advice - if changing the fuel filter, clamp all four fuel lines into the filter - remove and replace with full filter. Remove the clamps. If engine does not start straight away, do not mess around - connect the in-line fuel pump as above and the engine will start EVERY time!

    Hi,
the reason you have to use startgas every morning is because there is a leak in the fuelsystem. Makes the dieselfuel drain back to the tank and leaves the fuelpipes full of air instead. No bleeding methode will change that ..

BTW the methode you're asking for hardly/ doesn't work anyway, Ceilidhalfie's does ..

Last post makes a lot of sense, also start gas should only be a very last resource and probably best avoided in this weather when glow plugs may be operative.
Best to go over previous work and rule out any possibility of air entry to system, hoses not fully tight,o ring maybe not sealing properly, filter itself could be allowing air in.
These are only some possibilities to rule out,and if there is a non return valve at filter it could be faulty.

I followed the advice on this forum and it sorted me out.

Filled new filter with fuel by sucking on outlet hose with syhyphon,

fitted one way valve and 12V pump in line,

cracked open the inlet hose nut to the injector pump and then pumped fuel through to force out the large air pockets, then tighten up nut .

then took about 20 seconds of turner over, ( with pump Running) the engine then started.

you could see small bubbles going around hose between the fuel filter and the injector pump, I am convinced if I had filled the new filter with fuel I would not have had any issues. Thanks to everyone who posted really saved me some time.

I had the same problem when I 1st changed the fuel filter on my A6. Had to get AA out. He got it started using a primer pump. He suggested in future that putting some small clamps on the hoses to the filter( so that no air enters the system). Fill the new filter with fresh diesel refit hoses & remove clamps. It works for me every time.
