    Hi All

    I have a GOLF GTI 2.0 Mk4 2001, AZJ

Recently (2 weeks ago) the Engine Warning Light has come on and remained constant, while the EPC light seems to come on (occasionally) after 20 mins or so of motorway driving (not so much urban driving).

The car has since had trouble accelerating in all gears, i.e. if I put my foot down the rev meter goes up but the car does not respond and takes ages to accelerate! The car feels powerless in driving/accelerating.

I took it to a garage yesterday, and they attached a VAG-COM, which gave the following fault codes:

17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
    P1570 - 35-10 --- Intermittent

16804 - Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
    P0420 - 35-00 --

16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
    P0322 - 35-10 --- Intermittent

16705 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal
    P0321 - 35-10 --- Intermittent

    Readiness: 0000 0000

The mechanic cleared the lights, and told me that I needed a new Catalytic Converter, and that's what's causing the lack of power and over revving!

The Engine Light came back on by the time I got home 30mins later.

I would appreciate people’s opinions on this? I have my car booked in at a VW dealership (it is overdue a service), and am worried this might cost a fortune if I go through them.

    Many thanks

    Karl

VW dealership as i'm sure know are very expencive, if it just the cat you, could change that yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. depending on your car will depend on how much the cat cost, expect to pay around 350. I'm sure there is a good garage close to you, where any other work could be carred out.
