    Hi, does anyone know what milleage the timing chain needs to be replaced? also is replacing the time belt tentioner a big/expensive job as it is noisey on start up for a few seconds. Hope you can help.

    The timing chain is actually a belt and the general consensus is to replace it every 60,000 miles or 4 years - While Audi UK suggest otherwise, failure does happen and will cost you £££.

    It's a fairly big job (front end off etc) and yes, you should replace the tensioner and water pump.

    My Passat is also a 2001 2.0 petrol and I've had two belt changes.
