I have an 05 plate A6 2.7 Tdi, which unfortunately over the last couple of months developed what I can only describe as a clatter which lasts for about 2 seconds on start up. I am almost sure that it is one of the chain tensioners losing pressure when the car isnt running, and therefore renders the timing chain slack momentarily on start up. I presume the oil pressure thsn kicks in and actuates the tensioner hence removing the slack.
Can anyone advise me if this is a common problem, and if any harm will be done if left untreated. Thanks in advance.
p.s. The car runs beautifully once started, and it only clatters when left for more than about 20 mins

right bank tensioner (os) but very rarely causes any damage.
The tensioner has been modified so if you purchase a new one it will fine and it can be replaced in situ

Any idea if this can be changed without removal of the engine? Thanks

Thanks for that. Visited the local dealers, and they are quoting 27 hours labour for engine out, etc Do you know of any good technicians that would take on this type of job locally. Cheers

A8 Tech is fairly close to you geographically, and if he says it can be done with the engine in situ I'd take his word over your local dealers. He may be willing to take the job on if you ask him nicely? Worst case is he says no...

I would but I only under take diagnostic and retro fits at the weekend.I would re approach the dealer and ask one of there more technical staff to assist the booking clerk as its 3.7 hours labour to fit.If they are still unsure quote technical bulletin 2012744/6.
    Labour time repair operation number is 15 36 19 44 = 3.70 hours

Please do not take a copy of this with you but simply explain this to the booking clerk who will double check for you and confirm the cost.
Allow extra cost for the gaskets etc

Well, what a timely question. After weeks of dragging my heels I finally had to stump up 120 hard earned folding for main ******** to examine the car.
The prognosis is either a guaranteed fix in the region of £3500, or an unguaranteed fix of approx £750. For this lower amount they are going to replace the top tensioner (which is a known problem to them). It is going in this Monday 19th July, and I am leavimg it with them until I return from my hols on 2 August. I will let you know how it goes. Cheers Graham
